Talent in the making…
This year, the PPA London region, held an Arti competition for children under 12 and it wasn’t just any competition. This one came with a twist! The kids had to bring their own decorations, powders, glitter, paints…whatever they chose to use…and create the art piece at the hall. And what amazing creations we had turn up. Picasso would have been proud!
The 5 young girls who entered began with just a plain steel plate and made their master pieces within an hour and a half.
Of course, as soon as they heard the claps of the Garba outside and the music increase in tempo, they wanted to be out there. But not without putting the final touches to their entry.
From glittered India flags and coloured rice to electric divas and intricate coloured sequins – it was there.
One individual used Katy Perry as inspiration as she plugged in her earphones and listened to music as she worked. The 5 girls went all out and deserved their evening in the limelight.
The judges couldn’t decide who to award 1st, 2nd and 3rd given that the age of our artists ranged from 6-12. So they insisted that all entries were given the top prize.
For their enthusiasm, their excitement and their effort, the PPA London committee presented each child with a special trophy that they’ll be able to put on their mantelpiece and a 250 piece Super Art set with which they can continue to explore their artistic talent.
As the late Whitney Houston sung “I believe that our children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way, show them all the beauty they possess inside…”
The young are the future of this community and when an opportunity arises, we should be encouraging our younger generation to enter.
How amazing is it to see the smiles on their faces when they’re acknowledged for their hard work? When their name is called out? When they get a trophy and a gift to appreciate their efforts?
How lovely it was yesterday to see their parents check in on them every 5 mins and take pictures of them working away?
More importantly, it costs nothing except a little time, to get your kids involved and give them the freedom to express their gift, grow in confidence and showcase their raw talent; a talent which may grow to become their expertise.
So, if I may, I kindly request that moving forward, you take time out and encourage your kids to get involved. Without them, this community; this sense of kinship and togetherness will become extinct and we need to pull together to ensure the next generation enjoy the same benefits we do from being part of the PPA.
So with that in mind, we hope to see you with your kids at the hall from 7pm tonight for the special Garba and Raas we have organised for them
